March 13, 2022 - 2022 Tobacco Road Full/Half Marathon: The origin of the name and marathon medal reveal

Dear 2022 Tobacco Road Full or Half Marathon Runner,

Athletes don't typically associate themselves with the word "tobacco" except here in North Carolina.  In North Carolina--and especially in March--locals know that the words "Tobacco Road" have little to do with the plant or product.

We at the Tobacco Road Marathon would like to believe that the biggest sporting event in North Carolina in March is the event you are running in on Sunday, March 20, 2022.  However, for the benefit of those of you from other locations and for non-runners, "Tobacco Road" in March focuses on the ACC Tournament and March Madness.  This year, our revered Duke Blue Devils (under the final season of legendary Coach Mike Krzyzewski, retiring after 42 years) and beloved UNC Tar Heels (in their first year without 18-year Coach Roy Williams) are competing in the March Madness.  The other two major schools of the "Tobacco Road" rivalry--NC State and Wake Forest--are sadly staying home.  In fact, we expect that both Duke and UNC will have games on our race marathon weekend.

The Duke-UNC rivalry is intense--in part due to the proximity of the schools.  The northern end of our marathon race course is just 6 miles from UNC and just 8 miles from Duke.  In fact, if you miss that northern turn around and keep going on the American Tobacco Trail, you'll end up in Durham less than a mile from the Duke campus.  As many of you know, the American Tobacco Trail where we run most of our race is a rails-to-trails path (and, therefore, mostly flat) that replaced the former Norfolk & Southern railroad corridor from Durham to New Hill, NC.

And that brings us to the planned announcement of our medal--to be revealed on Facebook and Instagram at 7:00pm on Monday, March 14.  Yes, it has a train on it!  The shirt reveal is still to come!

As you are making your final preparations, please review our Quick FAQs and please remember bib and t-shirt pick-up is at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Raleigh-Durham-Research Triangle in Cary, NC, on Friday, March 18, and Saturday, March 19.

March 5, 2022 - Two weeks until 2022 Tobacco Road Full/Half Marathon

Dear 2022 Tobacco Road Full or Half Marathon Runner,

We will be sending several emails over the next two weeks, each with a few important information and tips.  We will try to keep each short and to the point, so take a minute or two to read each.

Date:  Two weeks from tomorrow on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at 7:00am ET

What's New for 2022:
  • CASUAL START:  While most runners will likely line up for a 7:00am start, you may start ANYTIME, AT YOUR CONVENIENCE prior to 7:30am.  Last year, many runners loved this more relaxed, start-when-you-are-ready approach.  This should be of particular interest to those of you who (a) still prefer some degree of social distancing, (b) didn't get in the port-o-john line soon enough, or (c) arrive to the race site a bit later than our recommended 5:30am arrival time.
--> Important note 1:  Age Group awards are based on bib/chip time, so starting later won't affect your placement.  However, the monetary awards for the top 3 (by gender) Overall, Masters, and Military divisions are based on gun time.
--> Important note 2:  We still have a firm 2:00pm cut-off, so if you are concerned about that cut-off time, please start as close to 7:00am as possible.
  • FREE PHOTO:  We are providing each runner one free race photo to download after the race.  Share it with friends and family!  Share it on social media!  Exult in your accomplishment!  (...and let us know if this is an important perk to you.  It is an additional cost to the race and, therefore, reduces our charitable giving.)
  • NEW HALF MARATHON SPONSOR:  We are excited to have a new, Half Marathon sponsor of VHB (https://www.vhb.com/) and thank them for their support of the Tobacco Road Half Marathon.
Pandemic Restrictions:  At this point, we have no specific pandemic restrictions.  We will follow government requirements, if any.

Exclusive deal for TRM Participants: 20% off your next pair of regular priced running shoes!
