March 19, 2022 - 2022 Tobacco Road Full/Half Marathon: Race Director Welcome

Dear 2022 Allscripts Tobacco Road Marathon and VHB Half Marathon Runners,

On behalf of the all-volunteer TRM Board of Directors, I am honored to welcome all of you, your families and friends, from every corner of this great nation to the 12th annual Tobacco Road Marathon in Cary, North Carolina.

As many of you know, the TRM Board of Directors had to cancel the 2020 race just three days before race day due to Covid-19.  The 2021 race was moved to the month of May due to state restrictions. We are so happy we have our normal race this year on the 3rd Sunday of March.  It should be a beautiful day with very comfortable running temperatures.

I am sure by now you have completed your training and hopefully are excited about race day tomorrow (Sunday, March 20).  I truly hope you all do well and achieve your goal--whatever that may be.  Please listen to your body, and if at any time you feel uncomfortable, contact one of our EMS staff. Stay with your training planning and most importantly enjoy yourself. When you finish on Sunday, you will accomplish something that 99% of the people in this world have not done, and you should feel very proud of yourself.  Please remember to ring the bell at the finish line if you have a Boston Qualifying time, achieved a Personal Best time, or are just feeling great about your race. Ring that bell proudly!

As race organizers, we work all year long to make sure we do everything we can to make this race enjoyable and safe for all runners. Please visit the pre-race Expo for important information about the race.   Also new this year, the Tobacco Road Marathon is thrilled to be partnering with VHB, the title sponsor of the Tobacco Road Half Marathon.

This year we are supporting the American RED CROSS by encouraging blood donation.  The “running” community is very civic duty minded, and the Tobacco Road Marathon Board wants to encourage area runners to help save lives by donating blood.  Runners who donate blood will get a code to use for a $10 discount off the race registration fee for the 2023 Tobacco Road Full or Half Marathon if they donate blood between March 23rd and May 1st, 2022.  Detalis on how to register will be posted on https://tobaccoroadmarathon.com/redcross early next week.

After this year’s race, the Tobacco Road Marathon anticipates donating close to One Hundred and Fifty Thousand dollars to charity making the total charitable donations close to $1.35 Million dollars since the inaugural race in 2010. This year’s proceeds will go to Hope For The Warriors, the American Red Cross, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Rails for Trail, Wake County Parks and Recreation, the Food Bank of North Carolina, and others. We are very proud of this accomplishment but could not do this without the support of our sponsors and our runners, and we want to THANK YOU.

I also want to thank our many dedicated volunteers, law enforcement and medical personnel and the TRM Board of Directors for making this a great event. Without their help this race would not happen.

Please accept my best wishes to all of you.

Sincerely,
Kazem Yahyapour
TRM President and Race Director

*Note:  A point of clarification.  Our "Casual Start" announced recent and new for 2022 allows you to start anytime between 7:00am and 7:30am.  Starting before 7:00am is not allowed for safety reasons.  It is dark out before 7:00am, and the roads used for the race may still have traffic on them.

Also remember, the Pre-Race Expo at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Raleigh-Durham-Research Triangle located at 201 Harrison Oaks Blvd., Cary, NC 27513 for race bib and t-shirt pick-up opens today (Saturday) at 10:00am and closes promptly at 5:00pm.

March 17, 2022 - 2022 Tobacco Road Full/Half Marathon: How to get there on Sunday

Dear 2022 Tobacco Road Full or Half Marathon Runner,

Our race day on Sunday, March 20, looks to be shaping up wonderfully!  The 7:00am start-time temperature is expected to be 51°F with mostly sunny weather and temperatures in the 50s until afternoon.

To get to our race site on Sunday, please review these directions:  https://tobaccoroadmarathon.com/parking , but if that is TL;DR for you, here's what you really need to know:

  • If you have a Parking Pass, we recommend planning to arrive by 5:30am to the Thomas Brooks side of the park at 111 Brooks Park Ln, Cary, NC  27519.
  • If you are being dropped off, we recommend ariving by 5:30am the USA Baseball side of the park at 7445 Green Hope School Rd, Cary, NC  27519.  (Parking--with a Parking Pass--is also available at this address, but it is limited due to construction at USA Baseball.)
  • Shuttle buses start at 4:00am.  If you are taking the shuttle, we recommend planning to arrive by 5:00pm at NetApp RTP at 7301 Kit Creek Rd, Durham, NC  27709.
  • WHY SO EARLY?  Answer:  TRAFFIC.  If we told you to arrive 30 minutes later, the traffic would be unbearable, and you wouldn't have time for porto-o-johns, bag drop, warm-ups, and pre-race selfies.  We couldn't start the race on-time.
  • Remember our new-for-22 CASUAL START.  You may start ANYTIME, AT YOUR CONVENIENCE prior to 7:30am.  So if you hit traffic, don't get in the port-o-john line early enough, or want to social distance a bit, there's no need to stress!  You can start later.  (Your posted finsih time will be based on your chip time.)
  • Spectators may ride the shuttles after 5:15am.  Also, Parking Passes at the race site are not required after 9:30am when half marathon runners begin to leave.  Spectators may also want to check https://tobaccoroadmarathon.com/maps for parking locations to see runners on the course.

Please remember bib and t-shirt pick-up starts TOMORROW (Friday) at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Raleigh-Durham-Research Triangle in Cary, NC, on Friday, March 18 (3pm to 8pm), and Saturday, March 19 (10am to 5pm).

If you have remaining questions, come ask us at the Expo or by reviewing our website, including our Quick FAQs.  Email to info@tobaccoroadmarathon.com or on Facebook Messenger will likley go unanswered as we focus on the Expo and Race Day.

March 13, 2022 - 2022 Tobacco Road Full/Half Marathon: The origin of the name and marathon medal reveal

Dear 2022 Tobacco Road Full or Half Marathon Runner,

Athletes don't typically associate themselves with the word "tobacco" except here in North Carolina.  In North Carolina--and especially in March--locals know that the words "Tobacco Road" have little to do with the plant or product.

We at the Tobacco Road Marathon would like to believe that the biggest sporting event in North Carolina in March is the event you are running in on Sunday, March 20, 2022.  However, for the benefit of those of you from other locations and for non-runners, "Tobacco Road" in March focuses on the ACC Tournament and March Madness.  This year, our revered Duke Blue Devils (under the final season of legendary Coach Mike Krzyzewski, retiring after 42 years) and beloved UNC Tar Heels (in their first year without 18-year Coach Roy Williams) are competing in the March Madness.  The other two major schools of the "Tobacco Road" rivalry--NC State and Wake Forest--are sadly staying home.  In fact, we expect that both Duke and UNC will have games on our race marathon weekend.

The Duke-UNC rivalry is intense--in part due to the proximity of the schools.  The northern end of our marathon race course is just 6 miles from UNC and just 8 miles from Duke.  In fact, if you miss that northern turn around and keep going on the American Tobacco Trail, you'll end up in Durham less than a mile from the Duke campus.  As many of you know, the American Tobacco Trail where we run most of our race is a rails-to-trails path (and, therefore, mostly flat) that replaced the former Norfolk & Southern railroad corridor from Durham to New Hill, NC.

And that brings us to the planned announcement of our medal--to be revealed on Facebook and Instagram at 7:00pm on Monday, March 14.  Yes, it has a train on it!  The shirt reveal is still to come!

As you are making your final preparations, please review our Quick FAQs and please remember bib and t-shirt pick-up is at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Raleigh-Durham-Research Triangle in Cary, NC, on Friday, March 18, and Saturday, March 19.

March 5, 2022 - Two weeks until 2022 Tobacco Road Full/Half Marathon

Dear 2022 Tobacco Road Full or Half Marathon Runner,

We will be sending several emails over the next two weeks, each with a few important information and tips.  We will try to keep each short and to the point, so take a minute or two to read each.

Date:  Two weeks from tomorrow on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at 7:00am ET

What's New for 2022:

  • CASUAL START:  While most runners will likely line up for a 7:00am start, you may start ANYTIME, AT YOUR CONVENIENCE prior to 7:30am.  Last year, many runners loved this more relaxed, start-when-you-are-ready approach.  This should be of particular interest to those of you who (a) still prefer some degree of social distancing, (b) didn't get in the port-o-john line soon enough, or (c) arrive to the race site a bit later than our recommended 5:30am arrival time.
--> Important note 1:  Age Group awards are based on bib/chip time, so starting later won't affect your placement.  However, the monetary awards for the top 3 (by gender) Overall, Masters, and Military divisions are based on gun time.
--> Important note 2:  We still have a firm 2:00pm cut-off, so if you are concerned about that cut-off time, please start as close to 7:00am as possible.

  • FREE PHOTO:  We are providing each runner one free race photo to download after the race.  Share it with friends and family!  Share it on social media!  Exult in your accomplishment!  (...and let us know if this is an important perk to you.  It is an additional cost to the race and, therefore, reduces our charitable giving.)

  • NEW HALF MARATHON SPONSOR:  We are excited to have a new, Half Marathon sponsor of VHB (https://www.vhb.com/) and thank them for their support of the Tobacco Road Half Marathon.

Pandemic Restrictions:  At this point, we have no specific pandemic restrictions.  We will follow government requirements, if any.

Exclusive deal for TRM Participants: 20% off your next pair of regular priced running shoes!
Mention this ad in store or use code RUN20 online at www.insideoutsports.com (some restrictions apply).

Are you doing a final long run this weekend?  Best wishes in your training!
