Our e-mail sent to registered runners on March 12, 2020, at about 3:00pm EDT:

Dear 2020 Allsrcipts Tobacco Road Marathon and Altra Half Marathon Runners,

On behalf of the volunteer TRM Board of Directors I am heartbroken to tell you we are cancelling this year’s Tobacco Road Marathon and Half Marathon. This decision was not made lightly. We consulted our sponsors, vendors, healthcare experts, and community officials, and we determined with a good conscience that we could not go forward with this race.  This race is extremely close to our hearts. We are a completely-volunteer race committee that donates 100% of proceeds to charity, and we have been working for 12 months to make this a 1st class event.  This decision was heartbreaking for us to make, and I accepted it with tears in my eyes.

Over the last few weeks we have been doing our best to take the necessary steps to keep runners, spectators, vendors and volunteers safe. With the increasing concern of community spread and keeping our community that we all love safe, this was the only step we could take.

At this late stage we are unable to offer runners a refund because we have already incurred the costs of holding our race.  We are giving ALL of our runners a FREE entry to next year’s race on Sunday, March 21, 2021.  Runners may use this entry themselves or transfer it to another runner.  Whether you were registered for the full or for the half this year, you will be able to run EITHER the full or the half next year.  In the coming weeks, you will receive an email with a special code and details about registering for 2021 at no additional cost.  Also, in the coming days, you will receive an email about how to get your race shirt, medal, and giveaway and, optionally, submitting any virtual race results.

Over the last 10 years we have been fortunate to be able to donate over $1,000,000 to Charity!  The worst part about this decision is that our runners and charities are going to be the ones who suffer. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your support. I look forward to seeing many of you at the finish line of next year’s race where I hope to be high-fiving you!
